Chac-Mool

€3,50

This model belongs to a sculpture of Chac-Mool which means "Red Claw". The term was coined in 1874 by the explorer Augustus Le Plongeon, who discovered this type of sculpture for the first time in Yucatán. He proposed the name chac mool in Yucatec Maya, thinking that it was a ruler with the name Jaguar. It was believed that he was a messenger or intermediary between man and the gods and was in charge of bringing offerings to the deities that were placed in the abdominal cavity. The provenance of the original is from Chichén Itzá (Yucatan) and belongs to the Early Postclassic Period (900-1250 AD). This sculpture was photogrammetrized by Artmonite at the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City during the summer of 2024.
