Michelangelo Buonarroti - Bearded Slave

This model represents one of the four unfinished prisoners or slaves that Michelangelo sculpted to decorate the mausoleum of Pope Julius II between 1519 and 1534. The original is carved in marble, measures more than two and a half meters, and is located in the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence. The fact that the sculpture is not finished gives it a special strength and power that is combined with the resounding anatomy of the person represented.
