Capital of The Salvador de Sepúlveda

Free

This model was inspired by a capital from the Church of The Salvador in Sepúlveda. This building is one of the oldest and most valuable examples of Castilian Romanesque architecture. Located on the heights of the Segovian town of Sepúlveda, its construction dates back to the year 1093, a date engraved on one of the stones of the apse. The church stands out for the sobriety of its architecture: a single nave covered by a barrel vault, a semicircular apse, and a detached tower later connected by a small vaulted passageway. Its capitals feature simple decoration, with somewhat rough and schematic carving that still recalls pre-Romanesque art. In contrast to the rich narrative sculpture that would characterize the fully developed Romanesque style in later centuries, here vegetal motifs, geometric patterns, and very simple interlace designs predominate. The Church of San Salvador is distinguished not by decorative abundance, but by the harmony between architecture and sculpture. Its capitals constitute an exceptional testimony to a moment of artistic transition, when Romanesque art was beginning to develop in Castile while still preserving echoes of early medieval art. For this reason, the church is considered one of the most important jewels of Segovian and Castilian Romanesque architecture. This model was provided by a private person and adapted by Artmonite.
