Houseago (Thomas) – Janus – Mirror Figure

This model is based on the work Janus – Mirror Figure by British sculptor Thomas Houseago (Leeds, 1972). Houseago is one of the most acclaimed contemporary artists for his distinctive approach to the human figure. His work combines references to classical sculpture with influences from artists such as Rodin, Giacometti, Picasso and Brancusi. Janus – Mirror Figure explores the human figure through symmetry, duplication and reflection. The title refers to Janus, the Roman god traditionally depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions. Houseago reinterprets this ancient symbol through a contemporary sculptural language, creating a fragmented and distorted figure that seems to exist between two identities or perspectives. As in much of Houseago’s work, he deliberately moves away from anatomical realism. The rough surfaces, simplified forms and visible traces of the construction process give the figure an unfinished, almost primitive quality. The result is a recognisably human sculpture that is at the same time strange and abstract, inviting reflection on identity, duality and self-perception. The work was exhibited in Madrid as part of the exhibition Thomas Houseago. Esculturas, installed in the gardens of Banca March. This was Houseago’s first exhibition in Spain and brought together seven monumental sculptures. Madrid also holds a special significance for the artist, who first visited the city as a teenager and was deeply impressed by Goya and the Prado Museum. The model was photogrammetrically scanned by Artmonite during a visit to Madrid in 2026.
