Melpomene

Free

This sculpture is a representation of Melpomene, muse of tragedy. It is a 30.1 x 44.7 cm marble sculpture with a strict, linear and immobile appearance found in a Roman villa in Monte Calvo (2nd century AD). This sculpture is on display today at the Carlsberg Glyptotek, a museum located in Copenhagen, Denmark, which houses a private collection founded in 1882 by Carl Jacobsen, son of the founder of the famous beer brand.

Melpomene holds with her left hand one of the masks that ancient actors used to wear as their main attribute. This representation is also related to two other characters from Greek mythology, on the one hand, the vine crown, refers to the god of wine and theater, Dionysus, and on the other, the sword, the soft shoes and the mask, represent the hero Heracles.
