Head of God Serapis

This model was created from a head of the god Serapis dating from the Greco-Roman period of Egypt (332 BC – 394 AD). The original sculpture is carved from Egyptian alabaster and its provenance is unknown. The god Serapis is one of the most important deities of Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt. His cult was promoted by the rulers of the Ptolemaic dynasty in order to unite Egyptian and Greek religious traditions, making him a symbol of cultural and religious integration. Serapis is usually depicted as a majestic-looking man with a beard and wavy hair in the Greek style. On his head, he wears the modius, a cylindrical vessel symbolizing fertility, abundance, and prosperity. The sculpture, preserved at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, is an example of the artistic syncretism that characterized Egypt during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. This model was photogrammetrically captured by Artmonite during a visit to Egypt in 2026.
