Sphinx of the Avenue of Sphinxes

This model has been taken from one of the sphinxes that forms part of the so-called Avenue of Sphinxes. This avenue is one of the most impressive processional roads of ancient Egypt, connecting the Luxor Temple and the Karnak Temple over nearly three kilometers, forming a sacred axis that played a central role in the religious life of the city of Luxor (ancient Thebes). On both sides of the road, hundreds of sphinx sculptures are lined up—mythological figures with the body of a lion and the head of a human or a ram. These sculptures had both decorative and symbolic functions: they represented power, protection, and the connection between the gods and the pharaohs. Many of the ram-headed sphinxes are associated with the god Amun, one of the most important deities in the Egyptian pantheon, especially worshipped in Karnak. The avenue was mainly used during the Opet Festival, an annual celebration in which the statues of the gods were transported from Karnak to Luxor in a grand procession. During this event, the people could participate in rituals and festivities that reinforced the divine legitimacy of the pharaoh and symbolically renewed the order of the universe. This model was created using photogrammetry by Artmonite during a trip to Luxor in 2026.
