Sphinx of Pharaoh Amenemhat III

This model was created from a sphinx of Pharaoh Amenemhat III, ruler of Egypt's Twelfth Dynasty during the Middle Kingdom (c. 1859–1813 BC). The sculpture is housed in the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo and is one of the finest examples of royal sculpture from this period. Egyptian sphinxes combine the body of a lion with the head of a king, symbolizing the union of physical strength and royal wisdom. In this sculpture, Amenemhat III is depicted wearing the nemes headdress and the uraeus, the protective cobra that identifies the pharaoh as the legitimate ruler of Egypt. The lion's reclining posture conveys stability, while the idealized facial features reflect the divine nature of Egyptian kingship. Amenemhat III was one of the most distinguished rulers of the Middle Kingdom. During his reign, Egypt experienced significant economic growth through major hydraulic engineering projects in the Fayum region and the exploitation of mineral resources in the Sinai and Nubia. His long reign fostered the country's prosperity and encouraged the flourishing of the arts, resulting in some of the finest royal sculptures of ancient Egypt. This sphinx is an outstanding example of the mastery achieved by Middle Kingdom sculptors, who were able to convey both the monumentality of the lion and the serenity and authority of the pharaoh. The work reflects the close relationship between political power and religion in ancient Egypt, where the king was regarded as the guarantor of order and harmony in the universe. This model was created through photogrammetry by Artmonite during a visit to Egypt in 2026.
