This 3D model represents a sphinx, the original of which is a seated female figure in limestone and belonging to the Roman period, 2nd century AD, of the art developed in Upper Egypt.
This model belongs to the collection of the British Museum.
In the Greek tradition, the sphinx has the head of a woman, the claws of a lion, and the wings of a bird. She is mythologized as treacherous and ruthless, and she will kill and eat those who cannot answer her riddle. It is said that the Sphinx guarded the entrance to the Greek city of Thebes, asking travelers a riddle to allow them to pass. The earliest tellers of the myth did not specify the exact riddle posed by the Sphinx.
Sphinx depictions are generally associated with architectural structures such as royal tombs or religious temples.
