This model is based on the cover of the first album by the supergroup 1980s. Asia. Asia is a British band formed in 1981 by Steve Howe (guitar, formerly of Yes), Geoff Downes (keyboards, formerly of Yes and The Buggles), John Wetton (bass and vocals, formerly of King Crimson and U.K.), and Carl Palmer (drums, formerly of Emerson, Lake & Palmer). Their debut album, Asia (1982), was recorded in London and reached number one on the U.S. charts for nine consecutive weeks. The album cover was designed by illustrator Roger Dean, known for his work with Yes and Uriah Heep, and depicts a fantastical sea creature that visually incorporates the band’s name.
